POPL 2024
Sun 14 - Sat 20 January 2024 London, United Kingdom

POPL 2024 will host several events focused on promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion, supported by Jane Street. These events include:

  • A DEI4Everyone cocktail reception at IET on Thursday, 18th Jan. The event will have DEI representatives give short talks reflecting on their experiences around DEI issues. The event is open to everyone and our goal is to foster DEI discussions, all while drinking fabulous cocktails! This will also be an opportunity for people to form groups to go to dinner and get to know each other afterwards.

    The reception will be cost free (thank you Jane Street!!) and can be registered for via the registration form.

  • Networking and community-building lunches for women, members of the LGBTQ communities, and under-represented minorities (URMs).

  • Mentoring lunches for junior faculty, and senior PhD students and postdocs who are on the job market.

Please contact Daniele Nantes (dnantess@imperial.ac.uk ) or Aseem Rastogi (aseemr@microsoft.com) with questions. Any feedback or suggestions are also most welcome.

NOTE:

  • All the events are open to everyone.

  • You must sign up for DEI4Everyone during registration if you wish to attend (and we hope you do!). You can also sign up for the lunches at registration, but this is not required for attendance. We hope to see you there!

There will be two lunches targeted specifically to underrepresented groups of the POPL community. The goal of both lunches is to bring together members of these groups in order to building relationships and informally network. Further details on both events will be posted here as more information becomes available.

URM@POPL Lunch

The URM@POPL lunch is meant to bring together members of populations that have been historically underrepresented in the POPL community, including women, African Americans, Hispanics, American Indians, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians, and Native Pacific Islanders. The goal of this informal lunch is to foster relationships, and promote informal networking.

The lunch will be held in the main lunchroom, with reserved tables for the participants.

LGBTQ@POPL Lunch

The LGBTQ@POPL lunch will be held with the goal of bringing together members of the LGBTQ+ community and provide opportunities for networking and community building. Anyone who identifies as a member of the LGBTQ+ community at POPL is welcome, including students, post-docs, faculty, and industry professionals.

Lunch will be served in the conference hotel in a private area separate from the main lunchroom.

Women@POPL Lunch

The Women@POPL lunch will be held with the goal of bringing together members of the women community. Anyone who identifies as a woman at POPL is welcome, including students, post-docs, faculty, and industry professionals.

Lunch will be served in the conference venue in a private area separate from the main lunchroom.

There will be two mentoring lunches at POPL this year, to help junior members of the community build their support network and receive advice from more senior colleagues. Anyone interested in receiving or providing mentorship is welcome to attend either lunch. Both events are free, and can be registered for when registering for the main conference. The times for both events will be announced soon.

Career Search

This lunch is intended for researchers who are looking for career advice from faculty and industrial researchers. This event is open to anyone who is on the job market or plans to be so soon.

Junior Faculty

This lunch is intended for new and soon-to-be faculty who are looking for advice from more established faculty on all aspects of academic life: e.g., grant writing, advising students, teaching, etc.

The open exchange of ideas and the freedom of thought and expression are central to the aims and goals of SIGPLAN; these require an environment that recognizes the inherent worth of every person and group, that fosters dignity, understanding, and mutual respect, and that embraces diversity. For these reasons, SIGPLAN is dedicated to providing a harassment-free conference experience, and abides by the ACM Policy Against Discrimination and Harassment.

Harassment can occur when there is no deliberate intention to offend. Be careful in the words that you choose. Harassment committed in a joking manner or disguised as a compliment still constitutes unacceptable behavior. Remember that sexist, racist, and other exclusionary jokes can be offensive to those around you.

Consequences of Unacceptable Behavior

If‭ ‬a‭ ‬participant in an ACM activity‭ ‬engages‭ ‬in‭ ‬prohibited behavior,‭ ACM ‬reserves the right to take any action ACM deems‭ ‬appropriate. ACM reserves the right to:‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

  • remove an individual from any ACM activity without warning or refund; prohibit an individual from participating in future ACM activities, including publishing in ACM publications;
  • exclude an individual from ACM leadership positions;
  • exclude any individual from deriving other benefits from ACM activities; suspend or terminate membership in ACM.

Such sanctions may be applied regardless of whether or not the offender is a member of ACM.

Appropriate sanctions also will be taken toward any individual who knowingly makes a false allegation of harassment.

How to Report Unacceptable Behavior

Any individual who experiences harassment (as described above) at any ACM activity should follow the Procedures for Reporting Unacceptable Behavior.
