In this talk, I use the metaphor of a university course (and its syllabus) to motivate aspects of effective mentorship. In particular, we’ll focus on selecting projects for undergraduate research, on-boarding research assistants, and helping undergraduates maintain focus and motivation throughout the semester. At the same time, we will see how current undergraduate students can use this metaphor for themselves to better “manage their manager” and get more from undergraduate research.
